Other than to satisfy the professor, what is the purpose of reading these difficult writings of people we don't know or care about? Many of these students find themselves asking, "What is this writer talking about?" Confused, some quickly give up trying to understand the story and make reading something just to get through, diminishing both their understanding and their grade. Knowing what these writers are trying to explain makes their stories much easier to read. Throughout history, we humans have tried to understand why we do the things we do. To aid in our understanding, many storytellers throughout literary history have written fictional and non-fictional stories about human nature to help others, as well as themselves understand. Human nature is what the writers of Our Time, Theft, and Music of the Swamp, three excerpts from the anthology Ways of Reading edited by David Bartholomae and Ant hony Petrosky, often read in English courses, are trying to explore. My personal story, Chinese Food Can Save Your Life, written for my English composition course is also an example of this exploration. The human nature in these stories is to blame other people, places, or situations for failures and general unhappiness. Most readers can probably relate to this since at one point or another, they have thought that, if they just had some extra money, a better job, a different lover, a new home, or a better childhood, they could be happier. To assign the blame to other people and things is easier than to point the finger at ourselves. Although a few things individuals are not responsible for do exist, such as ethnicity and hereditary characteristics, most of the things good or bad that happen to us are a result of choices we have made. While in recovery you are in and out of consciousness. Finally after being in recovery for 2 hours you are taken to a step down unit to recover and receive teaching and therapy. Serious injury specifically includes loss of limb or function† (Dillon. 2008. ). † This was an all too familiar of a situation for one Mr. Joseph Benson a 62-year-old diabetic with circulation problems tha t required a leg amputation.In this paper I plan to explore the legal implications in regards to the differences between negligence, gross negligence and malpractice. I will also explore some rational as to why union problems and/or nursing shortages could have been the cause of this disaster. Lastly I will describe the importance of documentation in regards to potential negligence as if I was the nurse involved with Mr. Benson’s care. I will briefly describe my ethical principles, which would guide this practice and how I would document the case to satisfy ethical and legal requirements. Negligence as defined by Black’s Law Dictionary (1979) and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO, 2002) is the â€Å"failure to use such care as a reasonably prudent and careful person would use under similar circumstances. † It is the predominant theory of liability in medical malpractice litigation (King, 1986) (Weld. Garmon. Bibb. 2009. ). † During my experience as a surgical nurse working in Obstetrics we used checklists and timeouts to make sure that we followed hospital protocols during our procedures.The checklists were in place to make sure procedures and paperwork was completed in an orderly and prudent manner. We could not continue onto the next step in the checklists until it was crosschecked by another licensed nurse or physician. This was put in place to ensure the patient’s well being and safety was addressed at each step in the checklist. Each one of the JACHO accredited hospitals has a similar checklist in place to ensure the patient’s wellbeing and safety. By having timeouts and checklists this could possibly prevent negligence. Gross negligence means, â€Å"reckless indifference to or a deliberate disregard of the whole body of stockholders† or actions which are â€Å"without the bounds of Reason (Sharfman. 2006. ). † One example of gross negligence would be giving a pa tient a higher dose of a narcotic instead of wasting the unused portion in order to keep the patient quiet and sleeping during a hectic shift. This nurse would have made a conscious decision to heavily sedate her patient against doctor’s orders, which would constitute gross negligence on the part of this nurse in this situation. In the case of Mr.Benson I think the physician could have been found guilty of gross negligence. If the doctor in this case would have followed timeouts and checklists the wrong procedure could have been avoided. â€Å"Barron’s Law Dictionary (1991) defines malpractice as a professional’s improper or immoral conduct in the performance of duties, either intentionally, through carelessness, or through ignorance (Weld. Garmon. Bibb. 2009. ). † The physician in this case could also be found guilty of malpractice. His neglect of professional duty comes in question as to the welfare of Mr.Benson. Did the physician show a lapse of judgme nt in his conduct during the time prior to the actual surgery by not following the procedures and protocols? It was not documented in the article as to the physician’s demeanor or conduct during the actual procedure. I do not have a written account of the scrub nurses or other Operating Room staff testimony as to what actually happened in this Operating Room. It would be speculation on my part to assume the worst of the physician without having all the details before me. I choose to agree with the patient. Mr. Benson was orrified at the outcome of his procedure. I would not matter to me whether the Neighborhood Hospital had nursing shortages or problems with the unions all I would be concerned with is how could this happen and what is the hospital going to do about this mishap. I would contact an attorney who specializes in Malpractice litigation and see what my options were as far as litigation against the hospital and also the physician. I would research about sentinel even ts and JACHO regulations which could further my case against the hospital and physicians who were involved.It is very important to document each and every step and to narrate in written form what happens while the patients are under your care. In the day-to-day world of nursing we have a saying â€Å"If it wasn’t documented it never happened. † I have never forgotten these words. It made a resounding impression on my professional nursing practice. Good, bad or ugly I document what actually happens during my shift and my care of my patients. At times, this includes having to document physicians demeanors, actions or lack of.I have had to document that I made several attempts to reach a physician by phone and left messages on his answering service and voicemails in which he did not return phone calls in a timely manner. It can be very frustrating as a professional nurse when this situation occurs as you are put in a place in which you are against a rock and a hard place. Later that night Yoast tells Coach Boone that he is not in any position to put his daughter’s safety on the line just because people don’t like him coaching the team, to which Boone replies â€Å"Well what about my girls’ safety?You just got a taste of what I deal with everyday, Yoast† leaving Coach Yoast thoughtful and silent. This also shows perspective because Coac h Yoast had understood that the worry and the vexation, that had aroused from the danger of his daughter is a mental weight and distress that Boone has to deal with for his family all the time, all because of the color of his skin. By stepping into Boone’s shoes, Yoast had now truly known the importance of equity and fairness to Boone, and the rest of the African American society.These are just a few ethics you can obtain from point-of-view. Stomp The Yard Review Stomp the Yard is by far one of the best captivating and entertaining movies I have ever watched. If there is a movie which I can vote for completely, then it is the movie stomp the yard. This movie is about an inner city krump dancer, DJ, who moves to Atlanta, Georgia for a fresh start. In the movie, DJ’s role is arrogant, over-confident, and determine to win the heart of April Palmer. The plot of the movie is so entertaining and touching that I could watch it everyday. This is my favorite movie because it focuses on responsibility and determination, it also shows how one person can not be above everyone else, it takes teamwork. Lastly, the movie shows how a man is to appreciate and treat the lady he loves. Stomp the yard focuses on competing fraternity steppers at fictional Truth University. DJ channels his anger at the system though crunk dancing, and his innovative moves make him a crowd favorite. But when a fight with a rival team leads to his brother Durons murder, DJ feels guilt and despair, which turns, no surprise, into more anger. Shipped off to Atlanta to live with his uncle and aunt, DJ finds new athletic, dance, and competition possibilities in stepping. At Truth, DJ is recruited by two fraternities who think his skills will help them win the national championship. He selects Theta Nu Theta because its leader, the one and only, Ernest Sylvester extols the virtues of brotherhood more than winning the title which of course, everyone focuses on winning. I give full credit to the director, producer and editors of this film. They really kept their brains working when they were coming up with all the ideas composed of the film. Such ideas as stepping, DJs love for April, Grants rivalry with DJ, April fathers grudge against DJs uncle for having stolen his girlfriend back in the day and the Pythons dream to beat The MU Gamma at the National championships. This film is well directed. For instance, when DJ moves to Atlanta and joins The Truth University, he discovers, stepping, the dancing technique which is traditionally done in African-American fraternities. It is here where teams demonstrate their complex moves and create rhythmic sounds by the use of their bodies. For example DJs talent sees him at the peak of hip-hop between rivalry of the two fraternities (Pythons and MU Gamma), the winner of which will be determined in front of a sold-out-arena at the annual championships, nevertheless, DJ has to overcome his own ego and learn the true meaning of brotherhood. The films nature has its audience fully involved. The editing of this movie was done with the highest perspective. Its rhythms are well edited, they are captivating and entertaining. In depth Stomp the Yard demonstrates responsibility and determination that makes this movie so real and interesting. The costumes and make-up directors did a marvelous job. The fact is that the costumes used in the movie were captivating. The costumes added relevance to the motion and main ideas in the film. For example, at the last stage of the movie, The MU Gamma fraternity presented a show that incorporated wolf sounds. This was further enhanced by the fact that the group had worn torn clothes. The use of different costume by the different fraternities brought out their sophistication. The director selected costumes that are widely used by todays generation of dancing artists. This film has a significant impact on its audiences. There are several aspects that have been tackled in the movie. The movie develops and improves on the dancing skill of those interested in dancing. It also urges the individuals (specifically the youth) to fight for what they want through dedication and commitment. For example, DJ has to overcome so many obstacles in order to accomplish the goals he has. The movie also shows the importance of standing by friends and family. This is shown when DJ is taken in by his uncle and also when April stands up to her father in order to defend DJ.
